Intelligent Pipeline Inspection
Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) Pigging: MFL pigs are designed to detect and quantify metal loss anomalies such as corrosion, pitting, and general wall thinning. These tools work by magnetizing the pipe wall and then measuring the “leakage” of the magnetic field where metal is missing or damaged. MFL is highly effective for identifying both internal and external metal loss.
Transverse Field Inspection (TFI) Pigging: While MFL is excellent for volumetric metal loss, TFI pigs are specifically designed to detect longitudinally oriented defects like axial cracks, stress corrosion cracking (SCC), and issues within longitudinal weld seams. Unlike MFL, TFI tools induce a magnetic field in the circumferential direction, making them highly sensitive to flaws that run along the length of the pipe.
